Would this statement make sense?

While early religions of prehistoric man made difficult lives easier, the reason they were created was to explain why things happened as they did and how nature could be affected through prayer, sacrifices, and other religious ceremonies(rain dances, etc.). Later as religions became more sophisticated, the promise of the heavenly afterlife, did allow many poor wretched people to bear their wretched lives. In the present, religion continues to have a palliative effect on millions of people.
