How to get an appointment for an interview?

So I called a few places and they all said that their hiring managers are calling the applicants right now; I don't want to wait for them to call me since I might not even get called. How can I ask them if I can come in for an interview without sounding overbearing but persistent; what do I say to them if they tell me they are calling people?
