Hinduism...What has tantra got to do with the love of Krishna and the gopikas?

I have heard from many sadhus about love of Gopikas for Krishna. It is said to be complete immersion in love and lust with absolute focus on the partner. Some sandhus also say that it is the tantra philosophy of love making. So did the philosophy of tantra exist during Krishna's times? Your inputs please.
