Windows Live, user error, or is it just retarded?

Recently I tried to open my windows live messenger and it told me there was a required update. So I clicked the update link and downloaded the installer. Once the installer finished I opened it to do this "required update" and then it says "You already have windows live!" Well no **** Sherlock. I tried it a few more times each with the same result. Finally I decided to do it the old fashioned way, I went into my computer and uninstalled the messenger entirely. Went to the windows live website, hit the download link, opened the installer, and guess what? "You already have windows live messenger!" Frustrated I searched my entire computer for anything windows live messenger related. Deleted all of it and removed it from my recycle bin for extra certainty. Clicked the installer, and same thing. They would gladly get me several other programs, but the Messenger portion says "You already have this." I even tried downloading an old version to see if I could update through that, but every time it just says "You already have a newer version of this!" I'm frustrated. Is there anywhere else that my computer might be hiding the messenger? Or how would I go about re-installing the entire thing over the top of the "version you already have" ?
